Okay so I was asked to post a run down of my James/Lily 7th year head canons… its too long yet watered down and I hope its not too boring.
Prior to the start of 7th year, Lily considers James her friend, I think she may have even run into James and Sirius a few times that summer. Lily secretly fancies James at this point, but she’s unsure how to tell him, and still a little apprehensive about dating him still. When she finds out James has been made Head Boy she’s excited at the prospect of spending more time with him, but to his face she pretends she’s resentful of him getting the spot doing half the work she did and 10x the detentions.
Anyway they spend a lot of time together in those Head Student meetings and Lily admires how well James takes to the responsibility (without becoming boring) and how serious his plans are for the future, regarding the war effort. But she’s really unsure if he still likes her, because she’s always had a hard time noticing when boys like her unless they specifically ask her out, which he hasn’t done since like, winter of last year. And of course James assumes she’s not interested in him, so they waste quite a few private Head Students meetings fighting the urge to make out with each other. I have a few different scenarios in my head as to how I wanted this to go down, but eventually Lily finds out he’s still really into her and she gets him to ask her out.
So I think all that would’ve gone down pretty quickly, since I like to maximize the time they were together since they died at twenty freaking one. They started going out by the 2nd or 3rd weeks of 7th year. Snape almost died, and intentionally got himself caught by Lily after hours so he could berate her about this, since he’s horrible. Also Sirius is very upset that his bro time with James has been cut significantly shorter, and Lily has to put a hex on him so that his tongue will stick to his nose every time the word ‘Yoko’ comes out of his mouth.
Anyway so time goes by and they’re super happy, and James wins the Quidditch cup for Gryffindor, and starts getting owls from pro quidditch agents, and he can pretty much join whatever team he wants. He goes away to train with a team (idk puddlemore or whatever) but he comes back early because he realizes there isn’t room for both quidditch and being a full time part of the war effort, and knows he needs to spend his time fighting against jerks who are targeting the love of his life, and also marrying her. When he gets back Dumbledore tells James and Lily about the Order of the Phoenix, and of course they sign right up.
A short time later, after the school graduation celebration, James proposes to Lily with a giant rock and she says yes because they are impulsive teenagers, but we have their patronus forms as proof that it was the right decision. And I guess that pretty much wraps up 7th year.

#who spends 6 years hating someone and then marries them at 18?
This is why I rarely read stuff pre 7th year, like if you don’t think Lily and James at least considered themselves friends by 6th year, I’m not too interested, haha. Not to say they didn’t have plenty of arguments, but they were def close by then.
